ZIEREIS EXTENDS STAY

Philipp Ziereis picked up a serious knee injury during the club's winter training camp in Spain and is sidelined until the end of the season. His current contract runs out in summer, but now director of sport Uwe Stöver has agreed a new deal with the centre-back until 30 June 2022.

"There was no question of us abandoning Philipp after his serious knee injury. We're convinced Philipp will be as strong as ever on his return and that's why we've handed him a three-year deal," said director of sport Uwe Stöver.

Head coach Markus Kauczinski also sees a big future for his central defender: "Philipp was a key player for us before his injury. He has huge potential and we'll do everything we can to get him back in the team as soon as possible."

Philipp Ziereis expressed his delight over the vote of confidence, saying: " I'm looking forward to the next three years and will do everything I can to return as soon as possible to play my role in the success of the team."

The centre-back joined the club in 2013 and has made 100 competitive appearances since then (95 league, 5 cup) and scored one goal.
