ZANDER AND NEUDECKER ON TARGET IN 2-1 WIN AT MAINZ

FC St. Pauli beat Bundesliga outfit FSV Mainz 2-1 on Thursday afternoon in a friendly that was only agreed at short notice and therefore held behind closed doors for organisational reasons. Jeremy Dudziak put through his own net after Richard Neudecker had opened the scoring at the Bruchweg Stadium, but Luca Zander restored the advantage just after the break.

Markus Kauczinski's side took the lead in the 17th minute after a quick counterthrust involving Jeremy Dudziak and Sami Allagui, the latter knocking a pass into the path of Richard Neudecker, who beat Rene Adler with a pinpoint effort into the far corner. The Bundesliga then assumed control of the proceedings and eventually levelled on 37 when Dudziak's attempted clearance from a Maxim free-kick flew into his own net.

With Christopher Buchtmann making his return to the side after a long injury layoff at the beginning of the second half, the Boys in Brown made the perfect start, Luca Zander pouncing on a loose ball in the Mainz box to drive a shot past Adler from a narrow angle to make it 2-1.

Another injury nightmare ended midway through the second period when Ryo Miyaichi made his first appearance since tearing a cruciate ligament for the second time. The Japan midfielder almost marked his return with a goal just before the end, but it wasn't to be, and the Boys in Brown saw the rest of the game out to secure a creditable 2-1 victory.

"It was a satisfactory performance and overall a good test for us against strong opposition," said Kauczinski. "I'm really pleased to see Ryo und Buchti back after long absences with injury. They showed glimpses of what they are capable of and it was clear they can strengthen the team."
