BOYS IN BROWN BEAT FC WIL 2-1

In the second warm-up game of their Maria Alm training camp St. Pauli secured a 2-1 victory over Swiss second division side FC Wil. Bernd Nehrig opened the scoring with a peach of a goal on 21 minutes before Sami Allagui added a second just after the interval. Ze Eduardo pulled one back for Wil right at the end.
Following a video analysis session in the morning Olaf Janssen and his coaching team were keen to see their instructions put into practice in the afternoon. But under the stewardship of former Kaiserslautern coach Konrad Fünfstück the opposition made things difficult with their aggressive pressing game in the opening stages. It was thus a high-intensity affair early on with lots of tackles in midfield as both sides sought to get a grip on the proceedings.
Sami Allagui had the first look-in on four minutes, but his effort was saved by Noam Baumann and the Tunisian was offside in any case. As the game wore on the Boys in Brown gradually began to assert themselves, though they struggled to find a way through the solid Swiss defence. But with 21 minutes gone new skipper Bernd Nehrig took things into his own hands and hammered an unstoppable shot into the top corner to give his side the lead. At the other end Philipp Heerwagen produced a fine save from a set piece on 35 to ensure the Boys in Brown went in at half-time a goal to the good.
Janssen's side came out for the second half looking to carry on where they had left off in the first. Just two minutes in Daniel Buballa picked out Sami Allagui with a long ball from his own half and the experienced striker finished off with aplomb to make it 2-0. Encouraged by the lead, the Boys in Brown tightened their grip on the game and gave little away at the back. After a string of substitutions in the closing stages Ze Eduardo pulled one back for the Swiss side in the 90th minute. It proved too little, too late, however, as moments later the referee blew the final whistle.
