St. Pauli sign Afeez Aremu

FC St. Pauli have added another piece to their squad puzzle with the acquisition of defensive midfielder Afeez Aremu from Norwegian top-division club IK Start on a contract that will run until 30 June 2023. The two clubs have agreed not to disclose any details of the transfer.

The 20-year-old Nigerian moved to Norway from Ghanaian first-division side Inter Allies FC in early 2018 and made a total of 63 competitive appearances for IK Start, scoring five goals and providing one assist. Aremu has also played three times for the Nigerian Under-20 team.

Reaction to the deal:

Director of sport Andreas Bornemann: "Afeez Aremu fits the profile we were looking for in defensive midfield. He's athletic and aggressive in the tackle and already has a wealth of professional experience despite his young age. We therefore believe he won't find it difficult to settle in with us."

Head coach Timo Schultz: "In Afeez we're getting a component our squad had been lacking. He's the dynamic 'enforcer' type of player I was after. He's already completed several seasons at a high level and at his age has potential to develop at the same time."

Afeez Aremu: "I'm glad to be here at last. When I got the offer from St. Pauli, I didn't need much time to think. It's a big club and for me the next important step in my development. I can't wait to get to know my teammates."
