FC St. Pauli have added the final piece to their coaching team with the appointment of Houston-born Fabian Hürzeler as second assistant coach. Director of sport Andreas Bornemann has handed the 27-year-old a contract until 30 June 2022.
Hürzeler began his coaching career in 2016 as player-manager at FC Pipinsried, with whom he celebrated promotion to the fourth-tier Regionalliga Bayern a year later. All in all, the 27-year-old clocked up more than 100 games in charge of FC Pipinsried. Hürzeler, who learned his trade in the Bayern Munich youth setup, also served as assistant to Germany Under-20s coach Meikel Schönweitz in the 2018-19 season and then as assistant to Christian Wörns with the Under-18s. As a player, Hürzeler made a total of 160 fourth-tier appearances for FC Pipinsried, Bayern Munich II, TSG Hoffenheim II and 1860 Munich II.
What they said:
Director of sport Andreas Bornemann: "I'm delighted our coaching team is now complete. Fabian has two years of coaching experience in the men's game and brings a wealth of professional and social competence for his relatively young age. We're therefore happy to have won him for our coaching team."
Head coach Timo Schultz: "It's great to be able to go into pre-season with the coaching team complete. Fabian is a great fit for us as a person and his age was irrelevant to be honest. He has proved he can manage teams at different levels both in the men's game and at youth level with Germany."
Fabian Hürzeler: "I did a study visit to St. Pauli two years ago and got to know Timo Schultz while I was there. During this time, we realised we had a lot in common about how football should be played. We're also on the same wavelength as people across the entire coaching team. For me, it's the perfect step to take in establishing myself in the professional game."
