The Boys in Brown celebrated their third home win in succession thanks to an impressive performance against Sandhausen at the Millerntor on Sunday afternoon. Afterwards we spoke to some very happy players in the mixed zone.
Captain Daniel Buballa: "We worked really hard during the week and assimilated the new tactics in such a way that – with a few minor exceptions – everything worked superbly from the off today. What makes us so strong this season is that when we lose someone to injury, others are there ready to step in. I'm really pleased for Viktor. He did so well in place of Dimi, who has been outstanding in recent weeks. I take my hat off to him! But as I said, what makes us strong is that instead of sticking our heads in the sand when we have to make replacements, we work hard and see a game out so brilliantly. One of two lads will probably be kicking themselves today like I did after the HSV game when I missed a chance just before the end. But it's great there are things we need to improve. After seeing out the game so well to win 2-0, we should be celebrating rather than worrying about missed chances. We're on a roll and aim to keep at it. We're enjoying ourselves on the pitch and playing good football. We want to build on that now."
Viktor Gyökeres: "We all worked hard today. The goal means a lot to me personally. I joined St. Pauli in summer and wanted to help the team. Today, I finally had the chance to do just that, and it felt really good to be out there on the pitch. It was a very good performance from us today. We kept a clean sheet and scored two ourselves and maybe could even have got three. But as I said, we all worked hard and deserved to win."
Waldemar Sobota: "We had control of the game to the end today. We're very happy with the win even though we could have scored more. I have a lot of respect for the performances of Diamantakos, Lawrence and Conteh in recent weeks, but the people who come in almost always do well. We're just an awesome group and did a good job today to win at home for the third time in a row. If we can now get a few more points away from home, it could be an interesting season, but I don't want to talk about the table now. We played well today and it's something we can build on."
Marvin Knoll: "We only had one big player up front in Viktor, so I played a slightly more attacking role today. I'm pretty robust and wanted to hold the ball up in attack, which I think I did very well. I wasn't meant to score today but we won and got three points, which is the most important thing."
Robin Himmelmann: "We have loads of quality in the squad and we all push each other. That goes for the lads in the first team and the lads who go up against them in training. That's a key factor. Having to make two or three changes today didn't really affect us. We can be very satisfied with the way we played today. It's good to know we're able to go flat out and see a game out cleanly."
