NINE-MAN ST. PAULI GO DOWN AT REGENSBURG

FC St. Pauli had a day to forget at SSV Jahn Regensburg on Saturday afternoon, losing two players to red cards in a 3-1 defeat. Marco Grüttner, Sargis Adamyan and Joshua Mees got the goals for the home side in front of a sell-out crowd. Johannes Flum replied for the Boys in Brown.

FCSP coach Markus Kauczinski made two changes to the side that lost to Union Berlin last time out. Richard Neudecker replaced Mats Møller Dæhli, while Jan-Philipp Kalla slotted in for Lasse Sobiech, who has a cold. Regensburg boss Achim Beierlorzer changed the team that won at Fürth in three positions, goalkeeper André Weis, Jann George and Sebastian Nachreiner starting in place of Philipp Pentke (rib injury), Asger Sörensen (muscle strain) and Sebastian Stolze.

After a low-key start in which the two teams sparred with each other in midfield, the game burst into life in the tenth minute when a defensive clearance fell at the feet of Jahn captain Marco Grüttner in the penalty box. The striker wasted no time in shooting, leaving Robin Himmelmann no chance with a crisp drive into the bottom left-hand corner. Undeterred by going behind, the Boys in Brown pushed forward and quickly fashioned chances for Jan-Philipp Kalla, Dimitrios Diamantakos and Philipp Ziereis before the quarter-hour mark. And yet the next goal came at the other end, Sargis Adamyan meeting a Jann George with a header to make it 2-0 with just 20 minutes gone.

The game stalled a little after that, with neither side carving out any chances of note. After Regensburg had been forced into an early substitution when Sebsatian Nachreiner sustained an injury in the 18th minute, Markus Kauczinski opted to make a tactical switch before the half was out, introducing Jan-Marc Schneider for Daniel Buballa on 39. On the stroke of half-time, however, Sami Allagui was given his marching orders for violent conduct.

When the game resumed after the interval it was the home side who began the brighter and Joshua Mees extended their advantage in the 48th minute with a curling effort into the far corner from just outside the box. Three goals to the good, Jahn sat back a bit and with 53 minutes gone Diamantakos slipped a Ziereis throw to Johannes Flum, who prodded the ball over the line from close range to reduce the deficit. The two goals failed to ignite the proceedings, however, and the two sides increasingly cancelled each other out.

Regensburg were content to sit on their lead, though they did create a huge chance on 71 that drew a magnificent save from Himmelmann to deny Mees from point-blank range. Six minutes later Cenk Sahin was sent off for a lunge on George, leaving the Boys in Brown to play out the closing stages with nine men. That second dismissal took all the air out of the game and it ended with no further scoring.
