SCHULTZ & CO. LEFT TO RUE MISSED OPPORTUNITIES

There were some extremely disappointed players in the mixed zone after the 2-0 defeat at SC Paderborn 07, no question about it. And there was frustration over the failure to claim their reward for a decent first-half showing, instead going in a goal down at the break. Nevertheless, head coach Timo Schultz acknowledged that Paderborn were worth their win on account of their performance in the second half.
Head coach Timo Schultz: "We gave a very good performance in the first half today. We created a few chances and gave little away, so it wouldn't have been undeserved if we'd taken the lead. Unfortunately, we failed to do that. If we'd managed to take the lead, I think we'd have had a good chance of taking at least a point today. The penalty for Paderborn was definitely the turning point. We're two on one and don't need to be going in like that. In the second half, Paderborn did well as we began to open up more and deserved to win 2-0. We can have no complaints."
Robin Himmelmann: "We had some promising situations and chances to take the lead. Instead, we went in a goal down at the break because we gave away a penalty. We were lucky when they hit the post once or twice, but we had more decent chances than Paderborn. After the interval we were no longer as threatening up front and were lucky not to concede a third goal. At 2-0 we had a phase where we exerted more pressure again and could have pulled one back. In the end, however, we didn't do enough to get anything here."
Christopher Avevor: "I'm gutted. We played some simple, yet dangerous football in the first half and created chances. We had the header from Ditte, the penalty from Rodrigo and other good situations and we really should have scored. We then gave away a penalty and were left chasing the game. Paderborn pressed us well and got a second goal. We could have knocked the ball out sooner there. We opened up after that and could have conceded a third goal. We still had chances to get back into it, though. We're all very disappointed because we know more was possible today. It's frustrating to go home with no points again."
James Lawrence: "It was a good first half from us and we put our plan into action well. We kept things tight, gave little away and created chances. Despite going behind I still felt we could get back into it at half-time but we lost control a bit after the restart. We might have pushed forward a bit too much there and we got caught on the break too easily. I was hoping for a different outcome on my first start, of course, but it feels good to get 90 minutes in again.
SCP coach Steffen Baumgart: "You're satisfied when you win, of course. The first half was very difficult for us. The penalty was key, we know that. It was a very evenly balanced game in the first half and we could have had no complaints if we'd gone behind. Nevertheless, you have to say it was a game between two evenly matched teams that was played at a high intensity. It was tight to the end. It was a bit annoying to hit the post once or twice but we can be more than happy with the clean sheet."
