The games are coming thick and fast at the moment, with the Boys in Brown hosting impressive newly promoted outfit SC Paderborn on Wednesday evening (1830 CET) in the first of this season's midweek league games. As usual, we've taken a closer look at our next opponents.
Impressive attack
SC Paderborn come to the Millerntor as the league's second highest scorers, having already registered 15 times this season. Only Cologne (16) have hit the target more often. Whatever they are putting in their half-time cuppa, it appears to be having the desired effect – no other side can match their 11 goals after the interval. Steffen Baumgart's team have merely carried on where they left off in the third division last term. The 90 goals Paderborn scored last season were a new record for the third tier.
Impressive morale
Paderborn have fallen behind in four of the six games played so far and yet lost only once, a 1-0 reverse at Darmstadt on the opening day. Against Fürth (2-2 after 0-2) and Bochum (2-2 after 0-1) they recovered to claim a point, while at league leaders Cologne they came back to win 5-3 after going behind twice (0-1 and 1-2). In Sunday's 4-4 home draw against fellow promoted side Magdeburg, however, Paderborn let a 4-2 lead slip and had to settle for a point.
Impressive record
As already mentioned, Paderborn were beaten 1-0 at Darmstadt on the opening day. That reverse is worthy of mention because it is their only competitive defeat in their last 23 matches. Since the 1-0 loss at Rot-Weiss Erfurt on 9 February, Paderborn have won 14, drawn eight and lost just that one.
Impressive recovery
Up, down, down, down again but then reprieved – Paderborn's last few seasons in a nutshell. In summer 2014 they celebrated promotion to the Bundesliga, only to go straight back down again. The following season they were relegated again. Another poor season followed and 18th place out of 20 would normally have seen them go down again, but because 1860 Munich were refused a licence, Paderborn retained their place in the third tier. The rest is history: a year later they were left celebrating a rapid return to Bundesliga 2.
Impressive Klement
Philipp Klement joined Paderborn from FSV Mainz 05 in the winter break last season. With two goals and five assists in 16 appearances, the attacking midfielder more than played his part in their promotion campaign. In the second division, Klement has provided five goals and two assists in his first five games, making him his team's most valuable player.
