MATT PENNEY RETURNS TO SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY AFTER LOAN DEAL ENDS

After just under a year with the club, Matt Penney will no longer wear the St. Pauli jersey, as his loan deal is coming to an end. The 22-year-old left-back is returning to England and Championship side Sheffield Wednesday. Penney made a total of 18 appearances for the Boys in Brown, scoring one goal – the second in the 2-0 defeat of Hamburger SV in the reverse derby.

Matt Penney was one of several players to arrive at the Millerntor when the season was already underway. Having hardly had time to settle, he made his debut in the 2-1 home win over Holstein Kiel, only to be dismissed for a second bookable offence in stoppage time. "I was disappointed to get my marching orders. I was totally focused on winning the game and forgot I'd already been booked," said the Englishman, who came on a season-long loan deal from Sheffield Wednesday.

It was a campaign with highs and lows for the 22-year-old, who overcame an injury to make 18 competitive appearances, including 14 starts, for the club. His goal in the reverse derby fixture, when he fizzed a no-nonsense effort into the HSV net from 25 metres to make a decisive contribution to our second win over our cross-city rivals this season, will remain etched in the memory, of course.

All the very best for your professional and personal future, Matt!!!
