SCHULTZ HAILS WORK OFF THE BALL

The Boys in Brown followed up on the 2-2 draw at Bochum with a win over Heidenheim in the first home game of the season. As you would expect, the mood in the camp was buzzing after the final whistle.

Head coach Timo Schultz: "It was an up-and-down affair today, a game with plenty of tackles and two teams who ran their socks off. If you can claim to have done more running than Heidenheim after a game, you know your team is fit. We ran nearly 125 kilometres, and that was necessary as well against strong opposition. I have to pay the boys a huge compliment for an outstanding effort against the ball. We frequently kept them away from our goal and pushed them out wide and we also defended well in the box, even though you can't stop Heidenheim all of the time. We switched the play well whenever we won the ball, carried a threat ourselves and deserved to get the goals. Even at 3-0 I kept asking my team to go forward and add another goal because something can always happen. The game can turn on one goal, though I always felt we could keep them at bay. It's a great feeling to win. We showed today that we're on a par with Heidenheim, though we also know we still have a long way to go and there's still plenty of room for improvement. Anything else would be a surprise. To start with four points from the first two games and a home win at the Millerntor always feels good."

Robin Himmelmann: "I think we put in a good performance for the fans and fought hard from the outset. Not everything came off, but we knew that would be the case. We were up against decent opposition in Heidenheim. It's a nice feeling to be able to do a lap of honour after the game."

Daniel-Kofi Kyereh: "We did even better today than we did at Bochum and deserved the three points. We shouldn't be conceding the two goals and wobbling a bit at the end, of course, but we pulled ourselves together, kept things tight and saw the game out. Getting off to a good start was important."

Marvin Knoll: "It's completely different with fans at the Millerntor, even if it's another thing altogether when the ground is full, of course. It was fun today. Heidenheim are a good team, but we were brutally effective. Our commitment and desire were good, we can't be faulted there. I'm very happy for Jannes. He always gives his all and is a perfect fit for St. Pauli."

Jannes Wieckhoff: "It's an incredible feeling just to run out at the Millerntor. The support from the fans was superb, they were loud the whole game. To score a goal in my first competitive appearance at the Millerntor is even more pleasing, of course. I was a bit lucky that the ball came to me but then I didn't give it too much thought. I just saw the goal and tried to stick it away. I could hardly believe it when it went in. It was cool to have the whole ground cheering my goal."

FCH coach Frank Schmidt: "First of all congratulations to my fellow coach and FC St. Pauli! It was a bitterly disappointing afternoon for us. We worked and played our way into the game very well. We certainly controlled and maybe even dominated the proceedings in the early stages and created some decent opportunities to score. We just lacked the finish and the determination. We had some outstanding chances and really should have gone in front. St. Pauli then took the lead with their first shot on goal. We played a big part in their second goal with an unnecessary error and then put it in ourselves. We wanted to make amends after the break, but their third goal soon put paid to that. That was difficult to deal with and we failed to keep up the pressure in that phase and ended up conceding a fourth. Normally, it's all over then. I was pleased with the way the team tried everything to get back into it and scored two goals. We deserved to lose, we have to accept that, but we still have positives to take from the game despite everything."
