FC St. Pauli are pleased to announce a key appointment: Andreas Bornemann has been named the club's new director of sport in place of Andreas Rettig, who took temporary charge after the dismissal of Uwe Stöver in April. Bornemann, 47, has agreed a three-year contract with club officials and will take up the post on 1 July.
"We're delighted that Andreas has found his way to the Millerntor despite having offers from other first and second division clubs," said club president Oke Göttlich. "We've stayed in touch in recent year and after extensive talks are looking forward to working with a strategic decision-maker who has been a major factor in the positive development of the clubs he has worked at in the past. He has done demonstrably good work in bringing on and developing young players at those clubs, ensuring many of them have made the step up to the senior squad. His work with youth players, but also his knowledge of the market and clearly thought-out concept, were the clinchers for us."
"In the talks with club officials it quickly became clear that we want to work on a sustainable sporting concept with the same level of conviction and I'll be given the opportunity to help to shape the future of the club," said Bornemann, explaining his reasons for joining St. Pauli. "The very positive talks with Jos Luhukay and our shared ideas also convinced me to make the move to the Millerntor."
Bornemann's most recent role was at FC Nürnberg, with whom he achieved promotion to the Bundesliga in the 2017/18 season. Before that he was director of sport at Holstein Kiel and Alemannia Aachen. Bornemann also had a successful spell in charge of the academy at SC Freiburg, where he made eight senior appearances as a player, and later served as director of sport there.
