No question about it, the Boys in Brown had every reason to be happy after the convincing 3-0 defeat of league leaders Arminia Bielefeld. Here's the post-match reaction after the final game of the year.
Director of sport Andreas Bornemann: "Bielefeld are a complete team who are tough to play against, but our coaching team and the players tinkered with a few things all week that could work against them. The foundation was conviction and determination, attributes some of the players had been said to be lacking. Today we showed desire and determination and the effectiveness and passion you need against such a good side. Bielefeld had some decent chances but didn't take them and the shot that came back off the inside the post near the end was typical of their day. You earn your luck, though, and we definitely deserved to win today."
Daniel Buballa: "It was another tough battle today. We got back on track against Wehen Wiesbaden last week and were the better team from the outset today. We hardly gave them a look-in and won the tackles. Bielefeld eventually ran out of ideas and resorted to hitting long balls. We then added a third goal just after the break and played the ball out superbly from the back after that. You can't do any better against the league leaders. We came under a bit of pressure but that's normal and we continued to play our game. Huge compliments to the team. We'll enjoy a breather during the break and then go flat out again in January."
Henk Veerman: "Yesterday I told the players I had a good feeling for today. We started brilliantly in the first 20 minutes. It was a really good performance today. We beat the league leaders 3-0, after all. It may have been our best to date. I've had a difficult year and so it's all the nicer to come back like that."
Waldemar Sobota: "You could see we were totally focused and had the fans behind us straightaway. The result tells it all, we won 3-0. Our plan came off perfectly. It was so much fun. Respect to the whole team for the effort and the performance! We deserved to win in the end and the points were desperately needed. We got them and that gives us a better feeling going into the winter break. I'm convinced we'll have a good second half of the season and I'm looking forward to it."
Leo Østigård: "It was outstanding today. That's why you play football! We gave a superb team performance. We had a really good plan and put it into action straightaway. Bielefeld weren't expecting that. We got the two goals and added a third after the break. The win will do us good and the fans as well. We needed them today and the support was fantastic. It was important to get three points today to give us confidence going into the winter break. I'd have liked to have kept playing, but we have an opportunity to recharge our batteries now and then work hard during the winter break for a good second half to the season."
Ryo Miyaichi: "It was a really good performance from all of us today, probably our best all season. I felt really good, which hasn't been the case recently. I'd like to carry on like this in the new year, of course."
Viktor Gyökeres: "The win was important for us. We went into the game with the necessary respect. We knew what a good season Bielefeld were having, but we believed in ourselves and took our chances. After going a long time without a win, we finished off with two wins and thus the maximum return."
